Week 26 - Boulogne

This week has been pretty sweet! We are finally starting to have success in the area and have three investigators that are progressing.

We have this lady named Maria that's like 70 years old and, she has come to church and we think we are going to have an interview with her this week... And she always talks about thieves in the neighborhood, and always makes me laugh.

Kati is 21 years old, and is the neighbor of a member, and we have been teaching her for a while now and we are also having her baptismal interview this week.

Lautaro is 12 years old and we actually found him looking for a reference that didn't exist. He came and played soccer with all the kids in the church, and then came to church the next day and is super excited to get baptized too.

This week we had an interesting experience as we were walking through the Villa Hidalgo, which is not exactly the safest spot in our area, but it's pretty mild during the day. We are walking to go find an inactive member, and start walking down this kind of narrow road with a ton of people on it. I'm not really paying much attention when I hear that there is a bunch of people shouting back and forth. There is this skinny dude thats getting shouted at, and then I see that three sketchy tattooed dudes walk out of a house with pistols, and I'm like "oh crap", we happened to walk right behind the skinny dude, so we just took off running. We made it out safe, but we never did find out what happened with that skinny dude!

Hope you all are doing well!

Week 25 - Boulogne

What's up family, how's it going? Hope you guys are having a good week!

This week has been pretty good, not much happened. Turns out Christmas here isn't super-festive, just kind of an excuse to drink a bunch I guess.

We had a sweet Zone Conference on Thursday with about half the mission in the mission home which was super fun. We went to eat at this restaurant called "Kansas" which was like super american and we ate really well there!!

They announced in church that in our ward, Boulogne, we are going to be starting at 10AM, which is awesome, because now more people will come hopefully! We had 1-hour of church yesterday and all of our investigators flaked as normal, and so it was alright.

I got my DNI, which is like my national identification card, and its pretty cool because it says that I was born in Estonia which is sick right? I'm gonna ask someone to look in to that. haha.

Anyways, I hope you have a great Christmas!

Week 24 - Boulogne

This week has been quite good, we have a couple good investigators that are progressing, but it's so stinking hard to get people to church. Oh and another thing, this week the weather was so weird. one day its 90 degrees and humid, and then the next its a torrential downpour. What gives man? We are getting ready for this Sunday and are hoping to have a ton of people show up to church, so we will see how that goes. The Spanish is good, I'm learning more and more slang every day and I'm realizing that people swear a lot here, haha.

Funny thing that happens, usually every time we leave the chapel there is a huge gang of like 10-year-olds that are always playing outside in the street by the chapel and they always shout at me jirrafa, jirrafa! [giraffe] and I always shout back at them duendes, duendes! [dwarfs], so I always get a kick out of that.

Anyway, in this Christmas time, I want you to all remember the importance behind it, and the real reason why we celebrate because of Christ. If you have a hard time remembering why we celebrate it, just break the word apart CHRIST-MAS [Christ-More], it's a neat little trick I learned. In all seriousness, I hope you all remember the Savior at this time of year!

Questions from mom:

1. What time are you going call on Christmas?

we plan right now for 2 o'clock my time

2. Do you get to email next Monday or is your p-day going to be Tuesday?

sounds like PDay Monday, so we can coordinate well next week

3. When is the last time you washed your sheets?

today

4. Where do you wash your clothes?

theres a washer in our building and then we hang the clothes in our bathroom and put a heater in there, it actually works well

5. Any plans for Christmas yet?

no one actually does anything on Christmas during the day. they all start the parties and stuff at like 10 at night, so for now nothing

Week 23 - Boulogne

Hello everyone, this week was very good!

On Thursday we had a Zone Conference and Interviews, which is always good, and we had an activity where we went out to the street and basically practiced contacting, and I went out with Elder Dominguez, the AP [Assistant to the President, one of the missionaries with the most responsibility in the mission] and this Elder was crazy, like sprinting after people, and stopping them trying to talk to them, but he was quite a good missionary.

I realized after that, at that point, he only had 3 days left in the mission, which means he left this morning, but he still had that excitement, so I learned a lot from him. Later in that Zone Conference all of the members of the Stake came to receive a training with us from the President of the Area, which was really good and got everyone super-hyped about missionary work.

On Saturday afternoon two of our lessons got canceled because who knows, nobody is reliable here, so we went to contact a reference on the other side of our map in an area called the "Villa Cava".  This villa is divided up into things called, "manzanas" [blocks] and absolutely no named roads and just a bunch of small passageways, and I thought for sure we were gonna get robbed, the reference didn't actually exist, but it was still cool to explore this place.

Anwyays, we are just trying to bring as many people to church for the December 23rd... Gonna be a great Sunday

Love you guys!
Elder Christensen

Questions from mom:

1. Do you have a piano in your church? Can anyone play?

we have a very out of tune piano, and the first counselor is the only one that knows how to play so he has to run back and forth

2. Did you get to watch the 1st presidency devotional?

no

3. Did you get a Christmas card from me yet? I sent one to the office and one to the address you gave me.

i got the card from you and Ryan's family and the magazine from dad

4. How often to the missionaries get their mail from the mission office?

never

5. Have you ever gotten any actual mail? I have never sent you anything in the mail (sorry), but I was wondering if anyone else has?

no mail, no one really gets mail

6. Do you have any plans for Christmas?

be a missionary

7. What is your companions 1st name? Garret asked me and I didn't know.

Dallin

8. Are any of the people that you have baptized still coming to church?

Yes, one of them is in the primary presidency and is preparing for a mission, 2 of them once in a while,  others we are working on to go to the temple

9. Why did you have all that cash in the picture you sent? I thought the church wired your rent money?

They gave us money to pay some expenses like water and stuff

10. Have you gotten mugged yet?

no

Week 22 - Boulogne

This week was quite interesting and very good.

There was that G20 conference this weekend which made everything a little crazy. They took all of the missionaries out of capital [downtown] and put them in the suburb and countryside areas. In our area, which is suburb, there is a protest every now and then, but then this weekend everyone just used it as an excuse to ransack everything and burn a bunch of stuff, so that was interesting. Nothing too sketchy, just got to know what areas to avoid at night, haha.

We had a baptismal interview with a lady this week, who i never thought would get baptized. Elder Telis and I started teaching her 3 months ago! She's 66 years old I didn't even think she was going to pass the interview, because she kept asking us if Joseph Smith was the one with the big beard, and I was like,  "No, gosh darn it lady, thats Brigham Young, we've already been over this!!" ...But she passed the interview on Friday, and all she had to do was come to church this week, but of course when we went by her house, she wasn't there. So now we have to wait 2 weeks for her to get baptized, but oh well, such is Argentina and crazy porteƱa ladys [Buenos Aires Ladys]. This week has been kinda cold actually, we have had to wear sweaters, which is weird considering everyone was saying we were gonna die in December...

Ummm. what else? Elder Haycock and I are getting along well, and we are both learning a bunch of Spanish. We have been finding an extraordinary amount of people who speak English here and mainly because they always approach in the street, and we get so excited, but they only want to talk because we speak English. We have 6 kids who are supposed to get baptized soon, but its insanely difficult to get them to church, we still haven't succeeded. The membership of Boulogne Ward would literally skyrocket if the Sunday Meetings started at 10am instead of 9am, so we are praying that in January when 2 hour church starts, that it gets pushed back an hour, but we aren't holding our breath. Anyways, hope you are all having a good week and i would love to hear from you guys!!!

Week 21 - Boulogne

This week was pretty crazy!

Tuesday we had our District Meeting as usual, but President Smith [the Mission President] came this time and got on a roll, so the meeting went an 1 1/2 hours, when it's usually not that long, so we missed 2 appointments, and those investigators got mad,  haha, but oh well, we got other lessons with them later on.

Saturday we had a baptism, right, but also River and Boca [the 2 main soccer teams in Buenos Aires] were playing again at 5 in the afternoon! So, we think "Let's schedule the baptism at 7:30pm, boom todo tranquilo right?" But, it turns out there was a ton of riots and all the River fans charged the Boca bus and hurt a bunch of the players, so the game kept getting pushed back further and further. But we didn't know any of this at the time. So, we were just chilling in the chapel at like 7:30pm,  and we are where saying, "where the heck is everybody?" We run to Carlito's house, and he says, "Elders I'm not getting baptized tonight, the games is on!" I'm like, dang, we need a miracle. so we start calling everyone telling the baptisms cancelled. but then our ward mission leader calls us at like 7:45pm and says "the game got moved to tomorrow, what do you want to do???" So we sprint back to Carlito's house, and we are like, boom, let's have the baptism right now, so we get like 7 people in the chapel and have the baptism start at 8:15pm. It was short, but very sweet. I felt super good when I baptized him, and he was ver, very happy, though you cant tell from the picture :)

On Saturday night, the bus ride back to the pension was so crazy, there was an insane amount of drunk dudes, made it interesting.

Sunday we had the confirmation of Carlitos, Elder Haycock, my companion confirmed him, and let's just say he was a little nervous about doing it in Spanish. We get up there, and his hands were shaking super-bad, but did a very good job, and I was impressed! So the game was supposed to be at 5pm on Sunday, so of course all of our plans got cancelled, so Sunday afternoon was very long, as usual. In the end, the game date & time got moved again, so we are going to have to bear through that all again pretty soon, oh well. :)

Hope you guys are all doing well!

Week 20 - Boulogne

Basically two really good things happened this week:

The first was that on Friday the whole mission went to a Mission Conference with Elder Gerrit Gong of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and he talked a ton to us, and his wife too. He spoke about how we've got to talk with everyone, and how the Lord is preparing people to learn about the church, we just don't know who.  It was super fun, they were super funny and super good. It was fun too because we got to see everybody in the whole mission so that was good.

Saturday we had the baptism of Ezequiel, a husband of a less-active member, and that was awesome he was super excited and it was a good baptism. His father-in-law baptized him and all the family gave the talks, so we really didn't have to do anything, just be present so that was nice.

P-day today we went and bought empanadas, and it cost 84 pesos [$2.32 USD], but I guess Elder Haycock heard wrong, so he gave the cashier 840 pesos [$23.20 USD]  and the cashier tried to like keep it as a tip I guess, so I had to explain that no it wasn't meant as tip, he just heard wrong. So I've been making fun of Elder Haycock for a while now, all in good fun, he's an amazing Elder and we are having a great time together!

Answers for Mom

  • How was week 3 with Elder Haycock? Are his Spanish & missionary skills improving?
It's going well, he's improving a lot, and is a hard worker, and fast learner, so a pretty solid week

  • You mentioned last week in your letter that your Ward Mission Leader was helping you a lot. Is this the same one that you said was just recently reactivated when you first got to the area?
Yes, same guy, now he's super active and has been a great help to us he's a good guy

  • Do you like your mission president? Have you have much interaction with him?
Don't really have much interaction with him, he's a very strict, by-the-book kind of guy, but from our trainings and what I know, he's an amazing Mission President!

  • Where did Ben Byers go when he got transferred? Have you gotten to see him since transfers?
He went to be a Zone Leader in Saramiento, his companion last transfer, Elder Dominguez, is now my zone leader and he says he's doing well.

  • Do you get to do anything for Thanksgiving or is it just another day? (I know that they don't celebrate it in Argentina, I just thought that maybe you still got to do something for it since lots of the missionaries are American and because you mission president is American.)
I didn't even realize Thanksgiving was coming up, and no, not really anything.

  • Has your ward been talking about Light the World?
No

PS - Sounds like Cameron Tyson [Idaho Basketball Player] has been playing really well. The area is going well, we have a ton of possibilities this week of new investigators and the members are helping us a good amount. It's weird, I feel like I know this ward better than the Bowdish Ward, like I know just about every person in the ward, like every less-active person too. It's interesting.

Week 19 - Boulogne

This was a crazy week, I just want to say that i officially hate all dogs with a burning passion, just to clarify, in case anyone had a doubt in mind, I'm sick of everyone having a rabid pit-bull as their attack dog when you ring their doorbell.

But anyway, Elder Haycock and I are getting along well, we've gone and played basketball a couple times this week, which is fun. My Spanish is coming along well, I would say I can understand like 95% of what people are saying, and I can communicate what I need to communicate, but yeah I've been realizing lately that Argentines use a lot of bad words haha.

Our investigators are good, progressing well, and our Ward Mission Leader is helping us a ton. On Saturday, our day just got trashed because there was a torrential downpour, and we just got soaked and plus Boca and River the two biggest soccer teams in Argentina were scheduled to play that night. but the game got moved to Sunday afternoon, so then all of our appointments and lessons got cancelled because everyone had to watch the game, so we just went and talked with this crazy less-active member who has a thousand conspiracy theories and explained each and everyone one of them to us, like how there were aliens living on the other side of the moon and stuff like that. Then, after the game there was a billion drunk dudes walking the streets and one of the members we were with almost got in a fight with them so that was intense, but anyway, it was a solid week.

We have two investigators getting baptized in the next two weeks so that will be sweet. I read a book this week where basically it talked about a ton of people believe IN Christ but they don't BELIEVE Christ... They accept the fact that he came to Earth and did what he did, and did the Atonement, but they don't believe that he can save them because they think the Atonement surely works for other people and but not for them, because they have this fault or that fault, but really the Atonement isn't for the righteous people its for the sinners more specifically, I thought that was interesting, hope you all have a good week and don't miss me too much!

Week 18 - Boulogne

This week was really crazy, it turns out I'm a "Father" now, which means I'm training a new missionary!

So on Tuesday, I said goodbye to Elder Telis, and then went to the mission home to pick up my "Son" [new missionary, start from the MTC]. There were like 22 new missionaries coming in, which was crazy, and I got to hang out with all my buddies from the MTC that were training too. So that was super, and the food is always super-good at the Mission Home. so i am still in the same area and will be there until the end of January, which is like a long time.

My son's name is Elder Haycock from Sandy, Utah and he's about 6´4" and a redhead, so we are going to be attracting a lot of attention in the streets. So yeah, now basically I'm in charge and i have to talk all the time. I will say my Spanish has improved a ton because now everyone talks to me and I basically just talk on the cell phone 24/7 now, trying to arrange appointments and get everything in order.

Saturday we had a baptism with Franco, which went really well, my comp baptized him and it only took 3 tries to do it, because I realize now we didn't fill the font up enough. but yeah it's been fun teaching and messing with my new comp, he's real awesome, and has a ton of desires to work so that where we are at right now.

Today during p-day we made a ton of tacos with this Elder from Guatemala and he made me try this super-spicy sauce and like burned my freaking mouth what a chabĆ³n I am right, but anyway this week has been really good i hope you guys are all doing well!!

I forgot to tell you that in last month's testimony meeting this guy got up and sang for 10 minutes straight this super-quiet whispery voice and sung like three hymns then the Bishop passed him the card to sit down, and he just kept singing so the Bishop had to stand up, it was hilarious, and yes really with Spanish, I feel like understand 90 percent, and I just ask again if I don't understand, but yeah it hasn't been too difficult, like i thought it was going to be.

Questions from his Mom:

1/2. Are you a trainer? Yes
1. What is your comp's name? Elder Haycock
2. Where is he from? Sandy, Utah
3. What is you comp like? Does he play sports? Brothers and sisters? Are you getting along? Stuff like that? Plays basketball, is like 6' 4", has older sister, and younger brother and sister
4. Are you in the same area? Same area
5. Who is your DL? Elder Crandall, same as last transfer, he's from Arizona
6. Who is your Zone Leader? Elder Smith who is from Tri Cities and is cousins of a guy I know from basketball, from Mt. Spokane and Elder Dominguez from Salta, Argentina
7. Are you living in the same apartment? Same apartment
8. Do you miss your mommy? Yes
9. Do they do daylight savings in Argentina? I dont think so
10. Did you clean your bathroom this week? Yes

Week 17 - Boulogne

This week has been pretty crazy, to say the least.

Monday night, I ate something really funky, I think it was the chicken, but anyways you know how it is when you eat something like that and your stomach gets the rumblies. So on Tuesday we are riding the bus, and its super packed, and super hot and I'm just thinking that I'm gonna have to barf out the window or something, but luckily I made it back to the apartment in time to barf there, but now I feel fine, so don't worry.

Tuesday night and Wednesday in Chacarita which is in the city, and i went out with Elder Perry who's cool. They have the Area Offices, so I met Max's Great Uncle and Great Aunt, that was cool they were nice.

Also with Elder Perry, in his area, we went to this super-sketchy Cilla and everyone wanted to talk to me, I was famous it was awesome. I know how celebrities feel now, like all these kids were swarming me, and these drunk dudes kept wanting to talk to me but Elder Perry said no.  Anyways, we have just been working really hard one of our investigators had a baptismal date for this Saturday, but still had a lot of doubts and didn't pass the interview, so that was sad but we are gonna keep working with him.

Saturday we had an open house in the Chapel, which was pretty good, and we had a decent amount of people, and got some good references that we are going to try and work with.

Transfers are tomorow morning, and the most likely thing is that I stay here in this area for another transfer, but who knows anything could happen.

For Family:

What's up guys? I was just was thinking this week about how much I miss you guys, not in like a sense that I'm homesick, just that I am really appreciative of you all, hope you have a good week!

Week 16 - Boulogne

What's up? Everything has been going great, we had two baptisms this week and I baptized them both. The first, is a lady named Isabel, who is a friend of two members in the ward, and she is super nice and sweet and really receptive to the gospel the whole time and there was a bunch of people that came to her baptism too.

The second is another lady, named veronica, but she doesn't act like a lady haha. We contacted her in the street a while back and she gets really mad if we use "usted" with her instead of "vos" form... And she always calls us "che", which means dude, all the time and she's super funny and weird in a good way. Anyway, when I was baptizing her the water was a little cold and she put one foot in and then ran out, and I'm like "noooo" but then i finally convinced her to come back and everything was good. She brought 10 family members and friends to her baptism so that was awesome.

We have been working really hard to do a ton of visits with the members but the thing is that no one here in Argentina shows up on time, so we have just been telling them to show up an hour earlier than the appointment actually is, and that has been working well.

Friday we had interviews with President Smith and that like ate up all of our morning and afternoon because he was running two hours late. Oh yeah, and guess what, I was walking out of the church and a freaking dog bit me in the leg twice, like ever since I got to ArgentinaIi have grown to hate dogs because everyone single freaking person has a scary pitbull or something that will never shut up barking. But anyways this dog bit, me and ripped my pants, which I was real mad about, and who knows, maybe I'll get rabies now, oh well.

Sunday was Mother's Day here, and our Ward Mission Leader invited us over for a huge asado with all of his family and it was so good, there was so much food and I ate so much. An asado is basically where they just roast a ton of super good meat.

Anyways, another good week, and this will be my last week with Elder Telis because transfers are next week, so it will be interesting to see who is my comp next.

Week 15 - Boulogne

Everything has been good this week, we have a ton of people who are preparing to get baptized and have a ton of cool investigators.

All the weeks are kind of starting to blend together now, but this week we had Zone Conference on Tuesday, which was fun, and then we did splits with the District Leader in Villa Adalina, and I got swarmed by a bunch of kids in the Villa because I'm really tall, but nothing really happened, I mean just another normal week, I guess.

This week in Ward Council, shots were being fired left and right, it was nuts, like people just going off on rants, but the moral of the story is that the ward is really excited and passionate about helping the missionaries, so that's a win. I hope everything is going well for everyone of you all.

Week 14 - Boulogne

Hello everyone another great week has passed by, we are doing just fine.

Not really much to talk about except General Conference was really awesome this weekend.  2 hour church!!! How exciting, except now in the mission, I really enjoy 3 hour church, because, one, it's a break from walking, and two, the chapel has air conditioning.

I really enjoyed all of the talks that were given, my favorite was the one given by Elder Soares in the Saturday Afternoon session about a lot of time new members and investigators feel lost and we need to help them and fellowship them... I just wish all of our members of the ward had been there to listen to it, haha.

NOTE: Here's a link to the talk by Elder Soares he mentions

We have this crazy investigator named Veronica who actually is really nice and stuff, but she literally never stops talking, and I never know what to expect from her. So on Sunday she offers to give us ride to General Conference with her and her neighbor, and I'm like,  "Sweet, this will be awesome we don't have to take the collectivo [shared taxi]." But, then in the morning when we were driving with her I really regretted that decision because she was a horrible driver and kept going down one-way streets the wrong way, and things like that. So that was interesting.

We did a pre-baptismal interview with her and everything was going well until we got to question 4. which asks if they've ever committed a serious crime. And guess what, of course she answered "Yes" and so now we don't know what to do because she won't tell us what it was so, haahaha, it's just a crazy situation. But, we have another investigator Isabel who is getting baptized on the 19th, for sure, and she is so excited for that, and we are too.

Anyway, everything is good, and guess what we are going bowling later today, and I'm gonna school all these latin fools. :)

Week 13 - Boulogne

What's up? Another good week in Buenos Aires. We had such a crazy week this week, but the highlight was that we baptized and confirmed Milagros which was sweet. Everything went super well with the baptismal service, before and after. Except for one minor thing that happened before, haha, as we were filling up the font I opened the window right next to the font because it was getting steamy, but the window fell down on my thumb and literally like chopped off part of my thumb and started gushing blood into the font so that was kind of crazy, but anyways back to the point, Milagros baptism was really awesome and very spiritual, Elder Telis baptized her and then I confirmed her on Sunday. Then later Sunday night she texts us asking us what she needs to do to prepare to go on a mission herself and Elder Telis and I got so excited, and plus as a bonus she's going to make us some really good Peruvian food next week!

Everything else is going well, we have got some other good investigators, and we had ten investigators at church on Sunday which is a lot. My favorite is this father and son and they're really interested in strengthening their family and they're both capos. [Really cool]

Hmmm, trying to think of funny things, on Tuesday there was a ton of protests and strikes, so there was no public transport, whatsoever, so we hired a taxi to get to our area and we felt pretty cool for doing that.

Oh yeah, on the train ride back to our areas we were with Elder Palacios and he's trying to learn English and anyway he bent over on the train, and then he was like "uh oh Elder I have accident in my pants" and i just look at Elder Johnson and I'm like, "what really??", but it turns out he was just trying to say that he ripped his pants, so we had a good laugh out of that. Yeah, everything is good down here in Argentina nothing to complain about.

Everything is good, can't complain, the Spanish is getting better every week, I miss you guys, hope everything is going well!
